The Lymphatic System
The lymphatic system is a one-way drainage network running alongside the circulatory system, collecting excess fluid, metabolic waste and immune cells and returning them to the bloodstream. It has no pump — flow depends entirely on muscle contraction and movement. Hard training floods the muscles with waste products such as lactic acid, prostaglandins and cytokines, and full recovery cannot happen until the system clears them. When it falls behind, the result is the soreness, heaviness and swelling every athlete knows.
