Study 1
Hip Fracture Recovery
E. Betti et al., 1999. Evaluated the effectiveness of PEMF on subjects with femoral neck fracture undergoing surgery within 3 days of trauma. Protocol: 8 hours of daily stimulation for 90 days (75Hz – 30 Gauss).
PEMF following femur fracture proved effective for complete bone consolidation. The placebo group experienced more complications, and pain was significantly less in subjects receiving active PEMF — 94% pain reduction vs 70% in the placebo group.
Study 2
Knee & Cervical Osteoarthritis
Trock et al., 1994. Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial testing PEMF on osteoarthritis of the knee and cervical spine. Subjects assessed for pain, activities of daily living, pain on movement and joint stiffness. Protocol: 18 treatments of 30 minutes, 3 to 5 times per week (12Hz – 25 Gauss).
Magnetotherapy proved effective for osteoarthritis treatment with clear improvements in daily activities and substantial decrease in joint stiffness and pain. Knee osteoarthritis improved 32% vs 15% after 18 sessions, sustained at 26% vs 8% one month later. Cervical osteoarthritis improved 32% vs 22%, sustained at 29% vs 9% one month later — all results in favour of active PEMF.
Study 3
Post-Surgical Inflammation Reduction
Zorzi et al., 2017. Prospective, randomised, double-blind study evaluating the efficacy of PEMF after arthroscopic knee surgery. Started 5 days post-surgery. Protocol: 6 hours of PEMF daily for 90 days (75Hz – 30 Gauss).
Magnetotherapy proved a valuable treatment to reduce inflammation and promote healing post-arthroscopic surgery, without side effects. The therapy improved functional recovery and limited anti-inflammatory drug intake — 74% of patients receiving active PEMF stopped taking medication compared to 25% in the placebo group.
