What is veterinary electrotherapy

Electric current for pain relief and muscle function.

Veterinary electrotherapy uses electrical current for two purposes: pain relief and muscle stimulation. TENS currents reduce pain through the gate-control principle, while NMES produces controlled muscle contraction.

NMES works on both normally innervated and denervated muscle. It does not replace active movement, but it is one of the few ways to reach muscle tissue directly when passive mobilisation alone is not enough.

Two applications

Against pain and for muscle mobilisation.

TENS: analgesic electrotherapy

TENS currents reduce peripheral pain by modulating nerve signalling. Used for inflammatory pain and osteoarthritis in dogs, cats and horses.

NMES: neuromuscular stimulation

NMES triggers muscle contraction via the motor nerve and muscle fibre. Used on both normally innervated and denervated muscle to maintain tone and support recovery.

Indications

Clinically indicated for.

TENS

  • Post-operative pain, including cosmetic and spinal surgery
  • Pain from osteoarthritis
  • Pain from discopathy
  • Pain from lumbo-sacral stenosis
  • Pain from Wobbler syndrome
  • Increased range of motion
  • Reduced muscle contracture

NMES

  • Neurological disuse atrophy and hypomyotrophy
  • Orthopaedic disuse atrophy and hypomyotrophy
  • Muscle strengthening for post-operative recovery
  • Denervated muscle stimulation
  • Improved joint stability
Key benefits

Why choose veterinary electrotherapy.

Fast pain reduction

Rapid relief from acute and chronic pain through the gate-control mechanism, without sedation.

Prolonged analgesic effect

Relief that extends beyond the session, supporting a more comfortable recovery between appointments.

Denervated muscle stimulation

One of the few tools that can directly stimulate denervated muscle tissue.

Easier functional recovery

Complements physiotherapy and rehabilitation protocols to help animals return to normal movement.
